Educational Therapy Vs. Tutoring

Understanding the Differences

What are the differences between educational therapy and tutoring? Are they just two separate terms meaning the same thing?

Check out the following checklists to understand the differences:

Tutoring centers:

  • generally groups only
  • addresses lack of knowledge and skill only
  • focused on product (grades = product)
  • relies on external motivation
  • typically uses own evaluation measures
  • ineffective for true LD/dyslexia
  • may encourage dependence on tutor

Educational Therapy:

  • individualized and tailored to each individual student's needs
  • addresses neurological underpinnings of learning problems
  • based on brain research
  • focuses on the process of "learning to learn"
  • researched and tested evaluation and assessment
  • helpful for ALL levels of learning problems, including dyslexia
  • develops intrinsic motivation and confidence
  • employs extensive questioning, not merely “teaching”
  • stimulates areas of deficits to turn weaknesses into strengths
  • teaches students to “think about thinking” (metacognition)
  • teaches students to become self-directed

Although tutoring centers may be very effective for students who are simply behind in academic skills, students with true learning disabilities typically receive limited benefit from a tutoring-only atmosphere.

Individualized therapy can address those underlying weaknesses that even years of tutoring cannot fully address.

Is your child struggling in school no matter "how hard he (she) tries?"
Does he find it difficult to remember a sequence of steps or actions you ask him to take? Does she zone out when it comes time to do homework, or does it seem to take all night?

If anything above sounds familiar, do you and your child a favor and get the proper evaluation and treatment to help them succeed in the classroom and in life. That's what this unique type of therapy is all about.

Teach a man to fish – feed him for a lifetime.”
